Romance Genre Research

Romance

The standard conventions of the content of the romance genre include two characters falling in love and trying to make their relationship work. The romance genre often has happy endings where the characters seem to live "happily ever after."

Conventions usually seen in the production of romance movies are soft, natural lighting that aids in creating a realistic film. Another important part of romance productions is the music. There are usually non-diegetic songs playing in the background of scenes to induce certain feelings in the audience at precise moments. Because of their realistic setting, romance movies are generally cheap and easy to create.

The romance genre is mainly marketed toward women, as they are the ones who consume this genre of media most often. It is a very popular genre as it is so marketable to such a large population and posters, trailers, and advertisements can often be seen online, on billboards, and in theatres.

Pride and Prejudice is the first example of a romance film that embodies the romance genre. It is an incredibly popular romance movie adapted from the classic novel. The main plot of the film is the dynamic and romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. It has many potential love interests for Elizabeth Bennett to choose from, but the main subjects are Elizabeth and Darcy. This film includes an original score that plays in the background of scenes throughout the movie that creates the atmosphere and tone of the film. The movie follows the classic structure of romances where it follows Elizabeth as she attempts to decide who she will be with and forms a relationship with Mr. Darcy. The film depicts love as something sacred and beautiful and the book was the basis for many romance stories of today.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is the second example of an incredibly popular romance film that is incredibly representative of the genre as a whole. This example, however, is set in the 21st century, as opposed to Pride and Prejudice which is a 19th century period piece. This film follows Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry as they form a relationship built on lies and develop feelings for each other as they spend more time together. The main focus of the story is on the relationship between Andie and Benjamin. The movie takes place in the real world and the lightning, sets, and costume design all follow the classic rules for creating a romance movie set in the present day. The film portrays the creation of a relationship under false pretenses, but ultimately overcoming the lies that led to heartache and starting anew with someone you love.
